What do you think of ERO’s parent booklets?

The Education Review Office (ERO) evaluates and reports on the education and care of students in schools and early childhood centres.  They have asked us to pass this message on to you.

"ERO publishes a series of five booklets for parents and caregivers.

We want to find out how useful the information is to parents, how the booklets can be improved, and if parents would prefer to receive the information in a different way.

We’re starting with a survey of How is my child doing? To take part in the survey and to download a copy of the booklet, go to the ERO website. The survey runs until the end of September and only takes a few minutes to complete.

Meanwhile if you would like a hard copy of one of the booklets email  info@ero.govt.nz "

We will be welcoming ERO to Sylvia Park School in the fourth term as part of our current four to five year review cycle.

Congratulations Whaea Barb!

It is with much excitement and pleasure that our Principal, Barbara Ala'alatoa, has been awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for Services to Education.

As a school we are very proud and honoured to have such an outstanding Principal as Whaea Barb.

Thank you for the "window of opportunity' that you provide our life long learners.  Keep shaping the future, Whaea Barb, we're so lucky to have you at our school.

New classrooms!

You may have noticed a few new things that came on a big truck last week and were placed into the school grounds....

We're growing so fast that we need some extra space for classrooms.  They are only temporary, we are planning to have our very own brand new block of classes ready for the beginning of next year but we couldn't wait that long.

These classes will soon be giving lots of kids the space they need - we can't wait to see them buzzing with learning like our other classrooms!

Goodbye swimming pool

It's been great having the pool at our school for the summer terms but unfortunately it has had to go off to another school so we can use the space for other things.  Here is a big

Thank You

to all of the people - parents, students, teachers and friends of our school who helped to get the pool in place and packed up ready to go again.  Your help and support means that we can provide our kids with these special experiences.

What's going on here?

Hello Folks and Families,

As many of you are aware, Sylvia Park school is in a `happening' location with a whole lot of action happening up and down the highway, but there is something happening down underground below the sports field that is hard to believe!

We are `special' because under the field lies one of Auckland's largest sewer pipes, at about 2m high.  It has been there a very long time and needs some major repair work done to it so that it doesn't collapse with the stampede of students running over the top of it!

Reality is, Watercare are having to make a big enough hole in the pipe so they can lower a `small' boat into it so that the workers can go up and down the pipe and clean and repair the concrete pipes, with most of the work being done at night when the `water' level isn't so high!!  So far, they working on getting the work going well and smoothly, and should be all go very shortly.

So although we may get un-welcome noise and smells from their work, spare a thought for those who have to get inside it!

Introducing... Esther Casey

Who are you?

I am mum to two great kids in the junior school at Sylvia Park.  I have been a teacher and a librarian and am now working with schools to support their e-learning.  I was born in the Netherlands, and grew up in the Waikato, but have lived in Auckland for the last ten years.

What are you doing on the Board of Trustees?

I wanted to be on the BoT so that I could offer my skills to help the school community and support all of our kids' learning.  I was also offered the role of secretary which means that it is my job to make sure the minutes of our meetings are here on the blog for you to read if you want to.

What do you think is the best thing about being at school?

The best thing about schools is that there are so many dedicated people providing amazing learning opportunities for children and that they respond by developing an astounding range of talents and interests.  A school is just such a rich, exciting place to be.  This is especially so at Sylvia Park!

What kinds of things do you like to do?

Baking, reading and learning.  When I have time, I like to make (and eat...) cheese.
